Qatar Airways has acquired a 9.99 percent stake in British Airways parent company International Airlines Group

in order “to enhance operations and strengthen existing commercial ties,” the carrier announced on Friday. The Doha-based airline already is a member of the Oneworld alliance and has a codeshare agreement with British Airways. Qatar indicated it might consider upping its stake over time, although European Union regulations require its airlines to be majority-owned by EU shareholders.
