Location and History
On Madison Avenue, one block west of the Waldorf Astoria and across the street from St. Patrick's Cathedral, this storied hotel has gone through many changes since its two original buildings—an 1880s mansion and a modern 55-story skyscraper—were merged into a single hotel operation in 1980 by notorious New York developer Harry Helmsley and his even more notorious wife, Leona, who was dubbed the "Queen of Mean."
