Icelandic low-cost carrier Play ceased operations on Sept. 29, the carrier announced Monday. All flights have been canceled. The airline launched in 2021 and added U.S. routes in 2022.
The carrier on its website advised travelers to check other airlines for "rescue fares" and offered guidance for refunds, adding: "We are deeply sorry for the disruption this causes and thank you for your understanding."
The carrier on June 9 had announced that it would cease all North American flights as of October 2025 as two of its shareholders—CEO Einar Örn Ólafsson and vice chairman of the board Elías Skúli Skúlason—planned to take over the company. Earlier in September, the carrier announced that unit revenue had reached a record high for August.
At least one carrier so far has announced "special rescue fares to support affected Play airlines customers"—Germany-based Condor Airlines. Until Nov. 30, stranded or ticketed passengers can book a rescue fare on Condor's transatlantic routes to or from Berlin, Paris and Prague connecting via Frankfurt, according to the carrier. To qualify for this offer, affected passengers need to send proof of their original Play reservation along with full contact details to Condor's reservation department.
