Nearly one-third of 1,000 United Kingdom employees who took taxis for work admitted that they routinely cheated on such expense claims,

according to an online poll of adults who reported at least one work-related taxi ride in the past three months. Expense provider Spendvision commissioned the survey, conducted Sept. 11-14. Fraudsters indicated they added extra to taxi bills or expensed fares that were not business-related. Nearly 60 percent of respondents indicated they paid for taxis in cash while 27 percent said they used credit cards wherever possible. "A few pounds here or there might not seem like much to an individual, but if almost a third of your workforce is routinely adding £15-£20 a month to their expenses, the amount companies are losing quickly stacks up," according to Spendvision COO Shane Bruhns, who recommended that companies encourage employees to use cards to pay taxi fares to create a paper trail and lessen the opportunity for fraud.
