The Gates Foundation is an American, private philanthropic organization founded by Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates. In 2025 it posted $43 million in U.S. booked air volume. This figure has not changed since 2024.
In 2026 it is expected to rise to $45 million representing a rise of nearly five precent. The Foundation had a consolidated global airline spend of $63 million.
In 2025 the Gates Foundation moved some contractors online to use SAP Concur for bookings. The organization also rolled out new Concur UI where available. It also launched an internal travel dashboard for travel spend visibility, expanded virtual payment use and implemented Tripkicks, an app that nudges travelers toward smarter choices.
The Foundation has also deployed artificial intelligence in order to service travelers via virtual agents and a chatbot. It also used AI for booking recommendations and personalization, traveler behavior analysis, reporting and analytics, as well as gauging supplier performance.
The Gates Foundation had an annual budget of over $8 billion in 2025. This is expected to rise to $9 billion in 2026. It has committed to spend at least US$1 billion over the next two years to expand access to artificial intelligence with a focus on education and healthcare. The organization employs 2,375 people.
At the beginning of 2026, the Foundation’s board approved a cap on operating costs. This includes staff, salaries, infrastructure required to run the organization, facilities and travel expenses.
