Travel spend rose year over year at biopharmaceutical behemoth AbbVie in 2024, according to BTN estimates.
The company has made a comeback since its net revenue contracted in 2023 after losing exclusivity in the U.S. for the antirheumatic drug Humira. Total number of employees expanded by 5,000 to 55,000 in 70 countries in 2024, and there has been a steady stream of acquisitions. These include Aliada Therapeutics for $1.4 billion in October 2024; Nimble Therapeutics for $200 million in January 2025; Capstan Therapeutics for up to $2.1 billion in June 2025; and Bretisilocin, the lead asset of Gilgamesh Pharmaceuticals, for up to $1.2 billion in August 2025. All acquired businesses are based in the United States.
AbbVie also has spent heavily on research and development: $10.8 billion in 2024, enabled by an upturn in net revenue, which rose 3.7 percent year over year to $56.3 billion in 2024, and 7.4 percent year over year to $28.8 billion in the first half of 2025.
