In 2020, the primary focus of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-Day Saints’ travel program was moving more than 30,000 missionaries
around the world back to their home countries as the Covid-19 pandemic took
hold.
As that happened, the church spent $33.9 million in
U.S.-booked air last year, less than half of what it spent in 2019. The LDS
Church’s total T&E spending for 2020 was about $42 million, though that
figure does not include the costs of 67 charter aircraft used around the world
for missionary movement needs.
This year, the travel program’s top goal is getting as many
missionaries back on international assignments as possible where it is safe to
do so. As such, U.S.-booked air will be a bit higher this year but still well
below pre-pandemic levels.
