United Airlines announced orders for 50 widebody Airbus and Boeing aircraft, to be delivered between 2016 and 2019
. The 25 Airbus A350 XWBs and 25 Boeing 787 Dreamliners would replace the carrier's international Boeing 747 and 767 fleets. United said the new planes will be smaller than those they will replace and will have lower operating costs and greater ranges to enable the carrier to "profitably serve a broader range of international destinations." Having last ordered new planes in 1998 and taken delivery of them 2002, United also said it secured purchase rights for 50 additional A350s and 50 additional B787s.
