US Airways' proposed $8 billion purchase of Delta Air Lines would combine participants from SkyTeam and Star Alliance and present "a high-class problem for us
," said US Airways president Scott Kirby. "We would have the option of two outstanding alliances and will work with partners in each alliance to make a decision down the road." US Airways said a merger with Delta would "create one of the world’s largest airlines" with a leading market position across the Atlantic and an overall network of 350 destinations on five continents. From the United States, service to Europe would operate predominantly from Atlanta, New York JFK and Philadelphia. The merger would require various regulatory approvals. Delta thus far has stated its intentions to emerge from bankruptcy as a standalone competitor.
