The average price to fly one mile in the United States during May increased 11.6 percent year over year, according to the Air Transport Association
. That marked the largest increase for any month since July 2010. ATA also reported a 14.4 percent jump in the U.S. airline industry's passenger revenue and a 2.5 percent increase in miles flown by paying passengers. "Increased air travel spending in May leading up to the busy summer travel season reflects the recovering economy," according to ATA chief economist John Heimlich. "A double-digit yield increase with improvements in U.S. domestic and international markets will help the industry cope with stubbornly high energy costs."
