The U.S. General Services Administration announced 14 one-year airline contracts covering more than 5,000 routes and worth more than $2 billion
. Effective Oct. 1, United Airlines and American Airlines each will accommodate government travelers on more than 1,000 routes while Delta, US Airways and Northwest Airlines each will cover hundreds of routes. GSA said negotiated one-way fares are nearly 70 percent lower than commercial fares and "lower fares for advance reservations in selected markets" would help generate $4.5 billion in savings for the 2008 fiscal year program.
