The U.S. Department of Transportation reallocated Florida's rejected $2 billion for high-speed intercity rail projects mainly to states in the Northeast Corridor and the Midwest
, according to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. DOT allocated $450 million to Amtrak to create in the Northeast Corridor a 24-mile segment of track capable of supporting train speeds up to 160 mph, while Pennsylvania, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island will receive a total of $345 million for rail-related projects. DOT also granted $404 million to upgrade segments of track between Detroit and Chicago, and awarded $300 million to extend by 20 miles within the Los Angeles-San Francisco corridor the currently planned 110-mile segment of track capable of handling 220-mph trains. Overall, DOT's Federal Railroad Administration awarded 15 states and Amtrak with funding for 22 passenger rail projects. Nearly 100 applications had been submitted, according to DOT.
