The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded authority for new China routes to Delta Air Lines and United Airlines
, effective in 2008. Delta plans to operate nonstop Atlanta-Shanghai flights and United intends to fly nonstop between San Francisco and Guangzhou. DOT also proposed to award 2009 rights to American Airlines (Chicago-Beijing), Continental Airlines (Newark-Shanghai), Northwest Airlines (Detroit-Shanghai) and US Airways (Philadelphia-Beijing).
