The U.S. Department of Transportation announced new measures meant to reduce aviation congestion in the New York area
. The actions include flight caps at New York JFK International Airport, effective March 15, 2008. Depending on the time of day, total hour flights would be limited to "82 or 83." Other elements include "plans" for hourly limits at Newark International Airport; new flight patterns at Newark and Philadelphia International airports; satellite-based navigation procedures; and an "aviation czar to ... coordinate regional airspace issues and all projects and initiatives addressing problems of congestion and delays in New York."
