Southwest Airlines posted a $140 million net loss for the third quarter,
dragged down by $262 million in special items mostly related to fuel hedging. Southwest during the same period last year posted a $205 million profit. On a year-over-year basis, Southwest and subsidiary AirTran Airways increased their combined average fare by more than 10 percent to $142.31.
