The slots were made available following a recent U.S. Department of Justice
settlement agreement with American Airlines and US Airways. Southwest also "gained permanent control" of 10 LaGuardia slots that it had used under a lease agreement with AA. Southwest expects to announce new LaGuardia services in May 2014.
