Major domestic U.S. airlines matched modest fare hikes initiated Monday by American Airlines "across the bulk of their route system," according to FareCompare.com
. The price increases range from $3 one way for short-haul flights to $10 roundtrip for flights over 500 miles. United, Delta, Continental, US Airways, Southwest, Alaska, Frontier and Virgin America all matched American's move, "virtually guaranteeing this to be one of the few successful hike attempts this year," according to FareCompare CEO Rick Seaney, who expects more domestic fare hike attempts "as we head into 2011."
