Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines and South African Airways announced plans to increase fuel surcharges after aviation fuel prices reached US$110 per barrel
. South African is raising its surcharges between US$5 and US$30 per sector based on flight length. Following an increase to its fuel surcharges in December, Singapore is adding between US$3 and US$27, also based on flight length. The surcharge for an economy-class ticket between Singapore and the Americas now is $215 per sector. Cathay is upping its long-haul surcharges by 9 percent and short-haul by 11 percent. Meanwhile, Qantas indicated that in the near future it also may increase fuel surcharges.
