Delta Air Lines on Wednesday unveiled plans for the
redevelopment and expansion of Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy International
Airport. Work on the $1.2 billion project, which was approved by the Port
Authority of New York & New Jersey last week, will begin next month.
Delta anticipates relocating to the renovated terminal in
May 2013, when the project's first phase is expected to be completed.
The expansion of Terminal 4's Concourse B includes the
addition of nine international gates sized to accommodate larger aircraft, the
construction of a connector between Terminal 2 and Terminal 4, an expanded
baggage claim area and Customs and Border Protection operations.
"The newly expanded and enhanced Terminal 4, one of
many substantial investments we're making in New York, will provide significant
benefits to our customers, employees and the city of New York for decades to
come," said Delta CEO Richard Anderson.
"This plan allows us to move forward with the
enhancement of our terminal hub, one that will showcase modern, welcoming
facilities and meet the needs of the world's most competitive and largest
aviation market."
At Kennedy, Delta currently operates predominantly out of
Terminal 2 for domestic flights and Terminal 3 for international flights.
Ultimately, Terminal 3 will be demolished, paving the way
for aircraft parking, beginning in July 2015.
Delta said it flies nonstop service to 98 destinations from
Kennedy and offers more than 1,000 weekly departures from the airport.
