Amtrak will receive more than $1 billion under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act to offset revenue losses and maintain networks, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao announced Friday. Over the past several weeks, Amtrak ridership has dropped more than 90 percent, and the passenger rail supplier has reduced and suspended services. The funding will help Amtrak pay employees, buy fuel and be able to return to service quickly when recovery begins, according to Federal Railroad Administration administrator Ronald Batory. The Northeast Corridor, Amtrak's busiest route, will receive $492 million of the funding.
