Wizz Air, in partnership with onboard digital solutions company Immfly and in-flight retail firm Gateretail, has launched a new cabin technology initiative, Immfly announced Wednesday.
The partnership includes the rollout of two programs, each now in effect. One offers in-seat ordering via Bluetooth, which is now deployed across the Hungary-based low-cost carrier's fleet, according to Immfly. Passengers who download Wizz Air's app prior to their flight can browse and purchase food, beverage and boutique items from their personal devices, even without internet access.
The second program is a six-month trial of low-bandwidth connectivity, powered by Immfly's Equilux server Iridium's global satellite network. The trial will run for six months across five Wizz Air aircraft in the U.K. and offers wireless in-flight entertainment purchases, messaging packages, in-seat ordering, live payment authorization, and real-time operational data, including flight information, a moving map and destination content, according to Immfly.
The U.S. Department of Transportation in March granted permission for Wizz Air to operate flights between the U.K. and U.S. The airline indicated that it had no plans to launch commercial flights to the U.S., but that it would offer charter flights between the two countries.
