Pittsburgh International Airport officially opened its redesigned terminal on Tuesday, the airport announced.
The $1.7 billion project replaced the former landside terminal that housed the pre-security building and connects directly to the post-security terminal via a skybridge. The project removed the underground train to the gates.
The new space includes 12 U.S. Transportation Security Administration gates, up from seven. All have been consolidated into a single location and feature TSA's latest equipment and an automated bin return. The new baggage system cut the length of the bag belt to three miles from eight and is projected to cut the time for baggage delivery in half.
The airport includes 63 gates, down from the former X-shaped concourse's 75 gates, but the airport can continue to accommodate up to 15 airlines, it said. The airport currently accommodates 14 carriers.
There also is a new 3,300-space parking garage which the airport said features three times the amount of covered parking than previously available. The airport also added a terminal lot, an approximate five-minute walk from the terminal's front door, while the shuttle lot—formerly composed of the long-term, extended and economy lots—includes "thousands of parking spaces" and new heated shelters with a real-time shuttle tracking system.
