Delta Air Lines posted a third-quarter net loss of $50 million
, compared with a $220 net profit a year earlier. The airline spent $800 million more on jet fuel than during the same period in 2007. "While near-term demand remains solid, the current economic crisis creates uncertainty about the longer-term revenue outlook," according to president and CFO Edward Bastian. "We are monitoring the demand environment at a market level and are prepared to take quick and decisive action at the first sign of weakness."
