Delta Air Lines posted a $168 million loss in the second quarter, down from a $198 million profit in the same quarter last year.
Excluding $754 million in special items, including fuel-hedging adjustments and restructuring fees, the carrier's quarterly net income totaled $586 million. Consolidated passenger revenue increased 7 percent year over year, with passenger yield up 8 percent and passenger unit revenue up 11 percent. "By actively managing the business through capacity reductions and pricing actions, we expect to maintain our solid revenue performance despite the continuing uncertain economic backdrop," according to Delta president Ed Bastian. The carrier's second-quarter capacity dropped 1.3 percent year over year.
