The European Parliament this week voted to exclude managed business travel from the European Union Package Travel Directive,
which regulates the combined selling of more than one element of a trip—for example, a flight and a hotel. The directive is aimed at protecting leisure travelers, but business travel has sometimes been caught up in the rules as an unintended consequence. The Guild of European Business Travel Agents said it "welcomes this vote, addressing a long-needed clarification in the current legal framework." However, GEBTA said it remains worried about EU member states retaining the right to include business travel within their interpretation of the directive. "Such measures, even applied by a minority of member states, would annihilate the efforts made by this Parliament to clarify the status of business travel in the EU," it said. "Such an approach will also limit cross-border transactions and bring legal uncertainty."
