New York and San Francisco will have higher hotel room taxes, effective Jan. 1, 2009
. The New York City Council approved a "temporary" increase of 0.875 percent to 5.875 percent, bringing the tax to an average of $2.63 per room per night, in a move expected to generate $80 million during the next two fiscal years, officials announced. The provision is set to expire in November 2011. In San Francisco, the hotel tax increase equates to $3 per night on a $200 room rate for properties near the city's convention center, and $2 in the rest of the city, according to the Associated Press.
