American Express on Monday launched two security solutions, Token Service and host card emulation,
for mobile, near-field communication and online transactions. Token Service automatically replaces card account numbers with digital "tokens" that avoid storage of cardholders' account details by merchants and mobile wallet operators, thereby protecting against fraud, according to Amex. Token Service, based on EMVCo's Payment Tokenization Specification and Technical Framework, is available in the United States and in 2015 will be rolled out internationally. With host card emulation, card issuers store card account details on a cloud server. When a transaction is performed, the card details are transmitted to an NFC-enabled mobile device and then to a point-of-sale terminal "in a fast, secure manner," according to Amex. HCE is available globally.
