The European Commission approved for aviation navigation a satellite-based GPS augmentation system that improves the accuracy of signals across Europe
. The EGNOS system "enables precision approaches and renders air navigation safer" and reduces "delays, diversions and cancellations of flights," according to the EC. The service could lower operating costs, according to the EC, given that "the signal is provided free of charge and only requires a receiver aboard the aircraft," and would allow the aviation industry to plan shorter, more fuel-efficient routes.
