U.K. Likely To Relax Carry-On Rules
British transport officials are set to relax restrictions on carry-on luggage introduced after an alleged mid-air bomb plot was foiled on Aug. 10, BBC News reported today. The U.K. Department for Transport hopes to announce next Tuesday or Wednesday an enlargement in permitted hand luggage size and a limited amount of liquids and gels, such as toiletries.
Since Aug. 15, passengers flying from the United Kingdom have not been permitted to take liquids through airport security. They also have been restricted to taking through a bag with maximum dimensions of 45 cm. x 35 cm. x 16 cm., roughly the size of a laptop bag. The standard international maximum carry-on size is 55 cm. x 45 cm. x 20 cm. It is not clear if the new permitted size will be as large as this standard.
Officials have indicated that the relaxation is subject to the completion of security tests and successful logistical discussions with airlines and airports. Liquids may have to be placed in clear plastic bags to aid security searches.
The U.S. Transportation Security Administration has said it too is looking at allowing small volumes of liquid in carry-on luggage
