Virgin successfully bid for the slots at Heathrow necessary for the new services after the European Commission required British Airways parent IAG to surrender them as a
condition for acquiring BMI. "The European Commission recognized that a British Airways monopoly would be undeniably bad for consumers and Little Red will stop British Airways dominating routes and driving higher prices," according to Virgin Atlantic founder and president Richard Branson.
