Delta "after Sept. 29" will cease operations of its Comair subsidiary.
The shuttering "will not result in any significant changes to Delta's network," according to Delta, adding that there will be "no disruption to customers" and "no reductions in the number of Delta flights are planned at Cincinnati as a result of this decision." While the regional carrier represents only about 1 percent of Delta's network capacity, Comair provides about a quarter of the lift at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, according to the Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Delta is de-emphasizing regional jets in favor of larger aircraft, recently setting a target "in the upcoming years" to reduce the number of 50-seat regional jets in its network to no more than 125 from nearly 350. Comair president Ryan Gumm in a memo to employees explained that the regional carrier operates "some of the oldest 50-seat aircraft in the Delta Connection fleet, which also have the highest unit cost per flight hour."
