The European Commission and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration announced the "Atlantic Interoperability Initiative to Reduce Emissions (AIRE)
," a joint program designed to help deploy new technologies and establish new procedures that would "have a direct impact in the short- and medium-term on greenhouse gas emissions." For example, "reduced engine" landing approaches that generate less noise and lower emissions already have been tested in Atlanta, Louisville and Stockholm. AIRE also airplane Airbus, Air France-KLM, Boeing, Delta Air Lines, Federal Express and other aviation industry participants.
