Qatar Airways has agreed to purchase 5 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel per year for five years from producer Gevo, the companies announced Tuesday. The deliveries are expected to begin in 2028 at various airports in California.
The carrier is part of the Oneworld airline alliance and this agreement falls under the deal signed by Gevo and Oneworld in March, in which member carriers planned to purchase SAF from Gevo. Additional carriers that have entered into SAF agreements with Gevo include Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Japan Airlines, Finnair and Aer Lingus.
The agreement is subject to certain conditions, including Gevo developing, financing and constructing one or more production facilities to produce SAF. The fuel producer on Sept. 15 broke ground on a new SAF facility to be built in Lake Preston, S.D. Official construction is expected to begin in 2023, according to Gevo.
