The Basra International Hotel traded as the Basra Sheraton Hotel until 2003 when it was looted by criminal elements immediately after the fall of Saddam Hussein. Everything down to the copper wiring was stolen or trashed. In 2010 a Turkish construction company restored the hotel to its former five-star glory at a cost of $55.8 million.
