Average daily hotel rates in February increased year over
year in all global regions except Europe, according to STR Global.
In the Americas, ADR increased by 3.9 percent, including a
4.4 percent increase in the United States, and occupancy increased by 1.9
percent to 58.8 percent. Cities with the largest ADR increases included New
Orleans (30.7 percent), Houston (10.4 percent), Miami (9.6 percent) and
Santiago (8.8 percent). The largest ADR decreases occurred in Panama City,
Panama (down 8.4 percent) and Buenos Aires (down 6.2 percent). San
Francisco/San Mateo (down 2.6 percent) was the only major U.S. market where ADR
declined in February.
In Europe, February ADR declined by 3.5 percent in U.S.
dollars and by 1 percent in euros, although occupancy increased by 2.7 percent
to 59.2 percent. STR Global managing director Elizabeth Winkle noted that nasty
winter weather in Europe was a factor, particularly around the airports in
London and Amsterdam. ADR was up by 14.8 percent in Istanbul, the highest
increase in Europe, while Warsaw (down 12.6 percent) had the largest ADR
decrease.
ADR in Asia/Pacific increased by 3.5 percent in U.S. dollar
terms while occupancy decreased by 8.1 percent to 62.5 percent. For the most
part, both ADR and occupancy were strong throughout the region in February,
according to Winkle.
“However, China primarily saw decreases across the country
due to the Chinese New Year, which fell on Feb. 9 this year, compared with Jan.
23, 2012,” she added. “Historically, hotels see a dip in performance during the
New Year celebrations, as national holidays are observed and commercial
activities decrease.”
In terms of local currency, the largest ADR increases were
in Jakarta (20.6 percent), Bali (16.9 percent), Phuket (13.6 percent) and Tokyo
(10.3 percent). The largest decreases were in Ho Chi Minh City (down 13.9
percent) and Beijing (down 11.4 percent).
In the Middle East and Africa, February ADR in U.S. dollars
increased by 2.9 percent, and occupancy increased by 6.4 percent to 66.4
percent. The region's largest ADR increase was in Jeddah (10.3 percent), and
the largest decrease was in Beirut (down 19.8 percent).
