Hidden away in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, near the Big Sur River, this operation is more of a summer camp for families than an actual hotel, and standards run parallel with the area's bohemian past. In many ways, rates reflect the rarity of accommodations in this idyllic ancient forest enclave, but most checkouts will feel lucky to have paid the hefty tariff to overnight here. Access to the park is a privilege.
