The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on Monday reopened the Bay Runway at John F. Kennedy International Airport, which had been shut down since March 1, leaving only three runways in operation at the airport.

The Port Authority said the runway re-opening came a few days ahead of the July 1 schedule, and the reconstruction came in under budget, costing $348 million.

Still, there is some work to be done. The Port Authority said it completed 10,925 feet of the runway, with 3,647 feet of the runway work to go "in the coming months."

The runway, which is the longest at JFK, last was refurbished in 1993 and is expected to last 40 years, the Port Authority said.
